Job Title: School Director

Description:Menlo Park Academy, a rapidly growing community school for 200+ gifted learners in K-7th grades (with plans to add 8th 2011-12), is seeking an entrepreneurial and experienced School Director. You will report to the Board of Directors, and will work closely on a peer level with the Operations Director who oversees business and financial functions.

You will be the primary manager of all educational staff and programs, and will be relied on to: 

 help create a shared vision and articulate through voice & actions; help establish and prioritize clear goals and ensure continuous progress toward achieving them; 

 coordinate and manage all student services, including records, discipline policies, assessments; 

 support the implementation of high-quality standards based instructional practices focused on gifted learners that results in higher levels of achievement for all students; 

 serve as a positive force in establishing and sustaining a collaborative environment and shared leadership to promote learning and achievement of all students through regular observation and monitoring of teachers’ lesson plans and instructional delivery; 

 lead the local professional development committee, plan & approve all professional development for educational staff members, and manage teacher mentoring & certification processes; 

 allocate resources & manage operations within budget to ensure safe & productive learning; 

 be actively involved in and have knowledge of current research in curriculum, instruction, and assessment tools specifically as it applies to gifted learners; 

 engage parents & community members in the educational process and create an environment where community resources support student learning, achievement and well being.


“Developing the potential of gifted learners,” Menlo Park Academy is a community (charter) school located in the West Park area of Cleveland, and serves students from over 25 school districts in Northeast Ohio. The school was founded in 2008 by parents who felt that the unique needs of their cognitively gifted children were not being met by existing schools. 

Requirements: We are looking for an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial, experienced director, excited by the challenge of meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of gifted learners. You must have a positive outlook and “do whatever it takes” attitude, high ideals and be able to motivate and manage a team of classroom and “specials” teachers, after-care staff, operating teams comprised of parent volunteers as well as lots of other enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of direct experience with cognitively gifted students’ learning needs obtained through teaching, counseling, testing and/or administration; demonstrated successful leadership and operational experience requiring executive/administrative skills including budgeting, personnel management and evaluation, and customer interface; knowledge of state and local regulations, licensing and reporting requirements. Additional experience in curriculum development, non-profit fundraising and public relations is desired. Must be able to prioritize, multitask and communicate well, including via email.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience.

Start Date:  ASAP but no later than July 1, 2010
